History of Our Cottage
We looked up our cottage on the OSI historical maps online. (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V2,578432,756724,0,10)
From this we were able to establish that there was a building most lightly a house on this site built in the early 19th Century. The 6" historical maps are dated between 1829 and 1841 and some of the outbuildings are clearly visible on it. We also know that the previous resident was born in 1914 and from looking at census form from the area we suspect that her husband was born around 1906 but theirs was a common name in the area so it's hard to pinpoint. In case you want to look up your family history: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ Here is a link to Griffith's valuation also: www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/ It is possible that the cottage was thatched originally. We're basing this on other local houses and the age of the property. On the other hand the house has two gables but these may have been built up afterwards when slate was added. This cottage is a good example of a typical vernacular Irish cottage. You can see other examples here: www.buildingsofireland.ie |
